Pierre is, by far, our most costly medical case ever. But we have some good news — he’s being adopted by his foster mama! Before that can happen, we’re working hard to get him as stable and comfortable as possible.
Here’s a look at his journey.

When Pierre joined the SAYv Family, we already knew he had medical concerns. He suffered from recurring anal prolapse. For many pets, the standard surgery works the first time.

Unfortunately, Pierre’s prolapse kept returning. We assumed it was linked to his severe diarrhea. We tried medications, diet changes, and multiple vet-recommended tests, but nothing helped.

After many interventions, we moved forward with a colonoscopy at the University of Madison — a very expensive step — along with additional testing during the procedure. That’s when we finally got answers: Pierre had a treatment-resistant strain of E. coli. Once treated, his diarrhea finally stopped and his prolapses became less frequent. We were thrilled to see improvement and relieved to finally understand what was going on.

But even with all of that progress, the prolapses never fully went away. They’re painful for Pierre, and heartbreaking to watch. His medical issues have also caused severe anxiety, which is completely understandable.

Last week, Pierre returned to the University of Madison for what we believed would be a colopexy. After further imaging, the doctors determined that wasn’t the best option for him. Instead, they recommended a BOAS surgery (brachycephalic airway repair) to help him breathe better by widening his nostrils, adjusting his soft palate, and removing swollen tissue that was blocking airflow. The estimated cost was $4,232 to $6,232, and we are still waiting on the final bill. We don’t know for certain if this surgery will resolve his prolapse issues, but the specialists believe it has a good chance of helping.

At this point, we’ve spent over $10,000 on Pierre because we refused to give up on him.

Pierre came home from surgery on 12/6/2025. Sadly, on 12/11/2025 he took a turn for the worse — sneezing, coughing, and vomiting — and he is heading back to the hospital today. We are really hoping it’s nothing major. This poor boy has been through enough.

Through all of this, Pierre has been incredibly resilient. His medical struggles have understandably created a lot of anxiety, and we knew he would need a very special adopter. We couldn’t be happier that his foster has decided to make him family.

Pierre is just one of many examples of why we are raising money this holiday season.
